About the Musée du Quai Branly

  • The museum opened in 2006, the result of a campaign begun by collector Jacques Kerchache and carried through by President Jacques Chirac, whose name was added to the museum in 2016.

Architect Jean Nouvel designed a five-level building raised on stilts over the garden, with the four continents displayed together in one open Collections Area rather than separate rooms.

Why Visit the Musée du Quai Branly?

Four continents, one journey: Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas sit together with no walls between them, so you can wander rather than backtrack.

A living collection: Close to 300,000 objects in total, with around 3,500 on display at any time and pieces rotated throughout the year.

A living building: Patrick Blanc's green wall covers over 1,000 square metres of the façade with roughly 15,000 plants across 376 species, one of the largest living walls in the world.

A garden built for quiet: Gilles Clément's 18,000 square metre garden is screened from the street by glass, with winding paths, pools and small hills to explore.

“The River” installation: A flowing river of projected text by artist Charles Sandison follows the ramp up to the Collections Area, carrying the names of 16,597 peoples and places from the collection.

Opening Hours at the Musée du Quai Branly
